You, Me and Dupree

Everybody has a friend who never quite got the hang of being an adult. It seems they got stuck somewhere in high school and can’t quite find the rhythm of being a grown-up. Randy Dupree (Owen Wilson) is just such a lad. He’s kind, gracious and fumbling. He has trouble distinguishing what’s privacy and what isn’t. He seems to find all of the push buttons to seem like a wounded bunny when hurt yet able to alienate his buddies by his obliviousness to the mores of relationships. Filling the crapper with noxious emissions isn’t going to help.

Formula 51

You’ve got one chance to save your life. Do you take it? Or do you hope for something better to come along? That’s the choice Dakota (Emily Mortimer), a killer for hire, faces. Elmo McElroy (Samuel L. Jackson), still in his kilt, has her by the wrist, dangling off the side of a building. He offers her $1 million to call of the hit or he’ll drop her. She counters. Ah well, life is short.

Once a deal is reached, she lands on a ladder while a crooked cop gets the drop on Elmo. Always interested in what’s up a Scotsman’s kilt, the cop asks as the fabric rises. Little does he know that it may be his last wish.

Returner

I remember from some other movie the scene where the hero/anti-hero on a motorcycle is careening down a highway (maybe with a girl-in-jeopardy on the back) chased by the bad guys in a roadster/Hummer/fast car and he jams on the front brake while twisting the handlebars. It forces his cycle into a pirouette and, as it twists, he fires his billion round machine pistol at them causing a gigantic explosion which would take out a small city in most places. And he just smirks. This movie has one of the best of those scenes in it with Miyamoto (Takeshi Kaneshiro) as the gunslinging maverick, Milly (Anne Suzuki) as the girl and a poor old Beamer as the car-in-jeopardy.

Rush Hour

City traffic can make you scream. The lights change too soon, other drivers are distracted by cell phones, dining and personal grooming. What can you do? Well one thing is to have a singalong. Soo Yung (Julia Hsu) may not be a teenager yet but she knows how to have a good time. All you need to do is sing and with a back seat all to herself, she’s finding it a grand endeavour. However, Soo Yung’s bodyguard (Roger Fan) isn’t so lucky since he has a job to do. Neither is Soo Yung’s driver (George Cheung) as he has to keep his mind on the road.

Batman Begins

Every day a choice is made to contribute to society and a choice is made to nibble away at its foundations. Rachel Dawes (Katie Holmes) is one of the former and she feels that Bruce Wayne (Christian Bale) is part of the latter crew. She figure he contributes to the lethargy that keeps bad men rich and good men afraid. A stinging slap is about all she can muster in her frustration. But her righteously indignant accusation that Bruce’s father would be ashamed of him cut him to the quick. His plan to gun down his parents’s killer leaves her speechless. But just to be sure he has got the message, she slaps him a second time.
