Shut Up & Sing

For a lad who often has one eye cast over the American border this movie makes for illuminating viewing. Reading and hearing about freedom of speech in the land of the free and the home of the brave where one political slur results in a corporate ban from 270 radio stations, CD crushing, death threats and genuine vitriol causes some degree of confusion. How come so few came to their support?

Shadow Man

I like a movie made on a shoestring when it can provide me with a reasonable plot, able acting, interesting locales, etc. But when the trade-off is continuity, it can be darn hard to stick with it to the end. Here, you’ll find the exteriors don’t match the scenery through the car windows, the chase cars get out of order, the camera speeds up to demonstrate stuff going fast and poor old Jack Foster (Steven Seagal) looks like he doesn’t know how to drive, sitting so close to the wheel. Sigh…

Lara Croft: Tomb Raider

Betrayal. It is always a shock to find out that our trust has been breached and it makes you tentative in who you will vest an interest. Lara Croft (Angelina Jolie) attends an auction to meet an old family friend and runs into a rival, Alex West (Daniel Craig) who swiped a prayer wheel or two out from under her. He’s still upset and doesn’t know how to reconcile the situation (I suppose they could start by swapping tips on how to do accents). She follows Wilson (Leslie Phillips) to his office, explaining how the clockwork device came into her possession, what she has found so far and asking how she can learn more. It is apparent to anyone watching that he is lying when he tells her that he knows nothing about the mechanism. Later, he calls Lara with a tip on who might know more as a slight attempt to salvage the shame he feels for deceiving her.

Mother Night

It is a classic dilemma. Howard W. Campbell (Nick Nolte) is a German sympathizer, a writer and spokesman who promotes the Nazi agenda. He is considered a celebrity with the Reich and a propagandist in America. He also works as a spy for the Americans. But his handlers disappear and he has no proof of what he does or has done. How can he prove his worth when nobody believes he had the best of democratic intentions.
