Wasn’t it one of the Wolfe boys who said that you can’t go home again? I suppose it is true in an abstract sense since all places and those returning are not the same as time passes. You can go back but you shouldn’t expect things to be the same as when you left. Tory Bodeen (Claire Forlani) is back to stay in her small home town but she’s not expecting much to be different when she left. Via a psychic vision, she knew where to find the body of her best friend Hope who had been murdered, the first of a string that continues every year on the same day. Her father had been the principal suspect when he was paid off to skip town. Folks are not too welcoming when she begins to open up her small shop on main street. But a few are able to move beyond the gossip. Cade Lavelle (Oliver Hudson) is still goofy over her and his sister Faith (Josie Davis) proves to be a fountain of support that Tory (and Faith) finds surprising.

What would you do to climb the social ladder? Spread malicious gossip, do some discrete blackmail, sleep around? Sure, why not? The view from the top is better and the perks are glamourous. Katya Livingstone (Jennifer Love Hewitt) is working her way up the social ladder. One of the steps on that ladder is an invite to a gala but she’s still too many rungs down to get one. But she finds out where the hostess Dove Greenstein (Stefanie von Pfetten) is getting a salon massage and wax. Subbing for a masseuse doing the waxing, Katya captures on film the hirsute hostess with the intention of swapping the polaroid for an invitation.

I don’t have an inclination to be famous. It seems to me to be a self-defeating process. Roxie Hart (Renée Zellweger) and Velma Kelly (Catherine Zeta-Jones) both seem to live, dream and yearn for fame. Do you have control over your life? Can you do what you want, when you want, go where you want and feel safe when doing it? Then consider yourself lucky. For this hasn’t always been the case. Whether a serf or a slave, it hasn’t been that long since most folks had little or no control over their lives. But some of them do find the gumption to try. Celie (Whoopi Goldberg) is forced to marry a local widower whom she calls “Mister” (Danny Glover) whose real name is Albert Johnson. With his wandering eye, he’s leaning towards Celie’s younger, more attractive sister Nettie (Akosua Busia). He treats Celie like a slave, prodding her to clean his disorderly household and to care for his annoying children. He beats and rapes her often, intimidating Celie into submission. But Celie builds a friendship with Albert’s mistress Shug (Margaret Avery) which pushes her to make a stand against him and decide to leave in search of a new and better life.

Colour me impressed. Dylan (Drew Barrymore), Natalie (Cameron Diaz), and Alex (Lucy Liu) have swiped a truck. They’re hurtling over a bridge when a tank at one end fires a round their way while a soldier fires a hand-held rocket from the other. The truck swerves off the bridge to avoid the assault and Natalie scampers out of the truck to uncover a helicopter from the truck bed. The other two leap from the truck and freefall grabbing the copter’s struts. Natalie cranks up the bird and all three escape with nary a chipped nail.

One day you answer the phone and the caller says she has been kidnapped. How do you handle it? Do you figure it is a prank and hang up despite the caller’s pleadings? Have you ever made a bet that changes your life? Sebastian Valmont (Ryan Phillippe) is offered a wager by Kathryn Merteuil (Sarah Michelle Gellar), his step-sister, that he cannot bed the virginal daughter of their private high school’s new headmaster, Annette Hargrove (Reese Witherspoon). If Sebastian fails to lure Annette into bed before the summer is over, Kathryn gets his prized car. If he succeeds, Sebastian gets Kathryn. Little do they realize that Annette is made of stronger stuff than either realize.

With 20-plus years to refine the style of car chases, plot misdirection, wardrobe changes, set decoration and dialogue, the Hollywood folks who made this TV movie show hints of where we are today. Cassie Bascomb (Sharon Stone) had been is recovering from the effects of a stalker and Dan Stoner (Tom Skerritt) thinks she is the key to solving the murder of magazine centerfolds. He keeps close to her until he discovers she knows more that she is saying.

Unexpected plot twists make this movie something more that usual fare. Cassie makes a move on Dan but he chooses to remain faithful to his family. Cop banter rises above the usual banal guy drooling over beautiful centerfolds. The magazine publisher is a stand-up guy rather than something slimy. On the whole this 1984 movie is better than you expect it to be.

Love takes many forms. You can love your new cell phone technology, you can love your girl friend, you can love your life. But when all three are entwined, events can interfere and smack up across the face. Sam Treadwell (David Andrews) and Cherry (Pamela Gidley) are having an intimate moment, rolling about in the suds from an overflowing washer when, pop…, an electrical spark flares. Cherry’s eyes roll up into her head. She’s short-circuited. Poor Sam, he’ll have to find some replacement parts if he wants his relationship with Cherry to continue.

Morality tales masquerading as teen comedies. Can happen, eh? High school graduation sees the jocks as having their last hurrah (especially if they don’t have an athletic scholarship), keen vixens trolling for that one who’ll set them up for life, geeks hoping to lose their virginity any way possible and wasters hoping to last the night until tomorrow when they can do it all again. So it goes at the party when Amanda Beckett (Jennifer Love Hewitt) shows up. She’s blossoming into the woman she hopes to be, Mike Dexter (Peter Facinelli) is hoping he can shed the rep he has spent years cultivating, Kenny Fisher (Seth Green) is trying to be anyone but whom he is, Denise Fleming (Lauren Ambrose) is trying to knock some sense into anyone who’ll listen.

Christmas is a time of tradition. What we did last year, we do this year. Or at least we do what we remember as being in the spirit of the season and not yucky (which is deep-sixed from memory). Try to stray from it and watch out. The noble season police pop out of woodwork and grind your guilt into a paste that absorbs any thought of changing family traditions. Just ask Luther Krank (Tim Allen) and his wife Nora (Jamie Lee Curtis) who decide to skip Christmas and go on a cruise since their daughter Blair (Julie Gonzalo) is heading off to Peru with the Peace Corps. Telling the neighbours proves to be a bit of a mistake. Vic Frohmeyer (Dan Aykroyd), the neighbourhood’s self-elected Christmas conscience is irate and starts up a group to harass the Kranks for their lack of holiday spirit, causing Luther and Nora to take refuge behind their curtains and sofa.

It is tough to be taken seriously when you’re blonde even in the IRA. Jude (Miranda Richardson) decides to be a brunette when she returns to enlist the aid of Fergus (Stephen Rea). He thought he’d shed all of the intrigue of the past. She brings it all back now that their cell has moved their activities to London. Fergus declines and Jude threatens his girlfriend Dil (Jaye Davidson), following them around town until he capitulates. As a result he is hustled into a car where Jude plans an assassination that has all the trappings of a suicide run for whomever is sent to lead the assault.

Most crimes that police investigate involve ones against other persons or ones involving property. Property can be replaced or repaired. But what about people? How can they be fixed? Civilized society prescribes that incarceration is about the best they can do. But is that enough? Sometimes healing requires other avenues. Alice (Gillian Anderson) has let society try but it has given her no satisfaction. She decided the perps need a remedial less in what revenge can mean. Notwithstanding their excuses for their crimes, some folks have trouble in understand what goes around comes around. But they will.

There is a bridge between the time you work at a job with no supervisory responsibilities and the time you are promoted to supervisor when you figure that someone will come along and point their finger at you and call you an imposter. You have no idea what you are doing and you’re terrified that someone will come along and strip you of all responsibility and kick you out the door. Making the transition to being able to fake what you’re doing until you learn the ropes and showing others you have a degree of control is a brief one. My time span was about a month and I clasped the mantra of doing the reverse of my previous boss’s behaviour to my heart. I survived. Ted Meyers (Breckin Meyer) struggles with the same panic when he is promoted to product manager. He confides in his wife Cassie (Laura Harris) of his reluctance and she understands the dilemma and suggests he has to decide what he wants for his future. She is ready to stand by him whatever the choice.

What does it take to step up and become a responsible adult, contributing to the family in its time of need? I suppose if you’re a party girl chatterbox like Pippa McGee (Heather Graham) who has eschewed responsibilities in favour of gallivanting around the world, a whole lot. But when dad Malcolm (Bruce Gray) has a heart attack and she wants to chip in and help out. Dad needs an bridal magazine editor and Pippa has some thoughts on the magazine’s direction during her first staff meeting. Sadly for them it has to do with the idea of marriage as indentured servitude and the industry itself as vampires bleeding dry all of their followers. Sigh… It is going to be a long day.

The struggle between Heaven and Hell, light and dark, good and evil goes on all around us, invisible to most. It seems that those above and those below have entered into an hands-off agreement and carry out their nefarious plots through their minions and half-breeds. But something is amiss for the hellspawn have been violating the terms of the accord in forcing Isabel Dodson (Rachel Weisz) to commit suicide. Her twin sister Angela (Rachel Weisz) enlists the help of John Constantine (Keanu Reeves) to figure out why her sister was murdered despite everybody’s belief it was a suicide. But their investigation is not without consequences. Angela is warned that, if she looks for the perps, they and those who manipulate them will see her too.

Sometimes your partner will surprise you with their understanding of your proclivities. Where your inclinations come from are buried in the morass of your subconscious. Something happened in your past that clicked on a switch that takes you in odd directions. You suppress it for awhile but it overwhelms you until you can no longer stand it until you have to act upon it. You aren’t proud of what’s going on but you have to continue. Hopefully it isn’t anything for which you can be convicted but it does provide you with a release. John (Andrew Ableson) tries to blackmail an alibi out of David (Mark Dymond) but instead he confesses to his fiancée Angela (Jules Leyser) that he wears her underwear while she’s out. She’s freaked into seeing hallucinations of John dressed up in her knickers. But others show her that there are worse things than stretched undies.

Having spent the better part of my high school day being picked on by one type of bully or another, I have a healthy disdain for all things authoritative. Once I figured out how I fit within the confines of the teen hierarchy, I was able to skip many of the gauntlets thrown into the path of others in my school (and help a few avoid them as well). Jimmy (Jesse Eisenberg) is plagued by a trio of bozos led by Bo (Milo Ventimiglia) who thinks that gay slurs and epithets will show how cool he is in the eyes of his acolytes and girlfriend Brooke (Kristina Anapau). A wrestling challenge goes awry after Jimmy is infected with lycanthropy. However, in an unusual turn for a movie like this, Bo’s loss does provoke his to come out of the closet.

Over the years, I have been poked, pricked and prodded by a variety of medical practitioners who have done any number of tests. The test that creeps me out the most is that done by my optometrist where he stuffs my head into that frame and proceeds to blast a puff of air into my eyes to open them up. Imagine instead that hypodermic needles are used instead of air are pushed into your eyeballs. That’s what Connors (Anthony Criss) faces. Even if I were blind like him and they promise to restore my sight, I can’t imagine agreeing to have thin steel pipes shoved into my eyeballs. Well, I’m not a tough as Connors so that when he lets Amanda (Nia Peeples) operate the machine to inject the cure, I’m cringing. And then he lets her do it a second time, now without anesthetic. I’m still trying to relax my sphincter.

If the chase through the Madagascar market by James Bond (Daniel Craig) in pursuit of the bomb maker as they go into and out of buildings, over scaffolding, up and down cranes, through packs of bad guys and local soldiers doesn’t get your heart racing, your blood steaming, your pulse pounding, your throat constricting and your eyeballs popping, then Bond movies just aren’t for you.

Nine times out of ten, I find that topics of discussion devolve into arguments. It seems most people I run into pick a side of a topic and treat it like it is the coming of the apocalypse. Either or, left or right, up or down, in or out. While many of life’s challenges have but two sides, they are many more where one can take a position out of many. But it seems that striking hard, early and loud, gives many the belief that their side is the only one. Even for lawyers like father and daughter, Jedediah Tucker Ward (Gene Hackman) and Maggie (Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio), who don’t, can’t or won’t discuss the vagaries of life even at Jed and Estelle’s (Joanna Merlin) anniversary party. All their rancor does is to further embed the wedge already driven between them.

It is always a surprise when you find out that someone close is not the person you thought they were. You sorta know that they do something dangerous but it is all rather vague. Until the day comes when they tell you what it is they do and why they do it. Eve (Amy Smart) is freaked when she finds out what it is that her boyfriend, Chev Chelios (Jason Statham), does for a living and finds herself a target as the bad guys chase the two of them through a sweat shop factory, over a roof, down a fire escape and into a stoled car speeding away. Rather than being aghast at what is going on, she finds herself turned on as they race down the side streets. To satisfy her urges, she figures what Chev needs is a good wank but she refuses to finish him off for fear that he’ll roll over and fall asleep like he usually does.

Gray Wheeler (Jennifer Garner) is so distraught at the death of her fiance that she flees to a bathroom to hide in the tub and mourn in peace. His best friend Fritz (Timothy Olyphant) needs some privacy as well. But his reason is more basic. He ends up in the bathroom too but his need is more carnal. He’s trying to find someplace so he and the caterer (Sonja Bennett) can have a quickie. Their passion is quickly interrupted but what else should she expect? He is a guy after all.

During my career, I changed job locations exactly twice. I had a number of other chances to take different jobs but the prospect of all the changes associated with new work was too daunting. A new job in a new location isn’t just a matter of getting in a car and turning left instead of right. There is the matter of friends from work and how to maintain the relationships, there is the matter of frequented shops for food and drink and minor purchases made every day, there is the matter of how to organize your day within your employer’s infrastructure. All this can lead to many awkward moments when you meet, by chance, someone from your old job after settling into the new one. Tom Carver (Samuel L. Jackson), an ex-cop who now cleans up bio waste, knows this well. He has moved on to establish a new career but the reception he gets from his old partner, Eddie Lorenzo (Ed Harris), makes him wonder whether any engendered loyalty remains or is he now just a citizen who should queue up like the rest. Or maybe Eddie just doesn’t understand why he had to move on.
