There are times in your life when an opportunity presents itself and you know that if you handle it properly, all sorts of wonderful things will happen. But how do you proceed? Andy (Luke Wilson) is asked by Lorna (Natasha Henstridge) to crack her neck when she is felling morose and down, her muscles are tight and she is tired. He doesn’t know how but he figures he should try and pick her up. But when he gives her a line about coming back to his place or goes to hers, she’s disappointed and grumpy that it is the best he can come up with.

How much discipline does one need to avoid straying from the path assigned to you? You’ve been given the task to carry out the assigned instructions but there is the temptation to stray and to be distracted by something shiny. You figure there doesn’t seem to be any retribution. So why not? But then there are the consequences and you can go back for a do-over. How do you fix things? Roxy Harvey (Jasmine Guy) revives a drowned guy, Daisy Adair (Sarah Wynter) trips up her actress colleague to take her place on stage, Mason (Callum Blue) gets shot by a robber yet steals the cash. All you can do is to live with the morals to which you subscribe and hope that you don’t have to suffer from any betrayal.

Mothers and daughters, the relationship is a complex one. Siddalee Walker (Sandra Bullock) is worried she will turn into her mom, Vivi Abbott Walker (Ellen Burstyn), and has resisted the entreaties of Connor McGill (Angus Macfadyen) to marry, fought of the ticking of he biological clock. She has based this upon what she remembers of her growing up around her parents and not the context of what her memories as a kid truly tell. The sophistication of memory can show what happened but not why they happened. A little perspective and some comparison to others would make quite a difference. But no, kids always know better.

Families come in all shapes and sizes. They are formed by marriage, convenience and disaster. Often, the come together as a group of unrelated individual in whom you can place your trust and expect that they’ll be there when you need them. Aladar (voice of D.B. Sweeney), a young Iguanodon, is raised from an egg by a band of lemurs after his egg is deposited on their island by a Pteranodon. Not knowing any better, he regards them as his family. When a giant meteor appears in the sky and falls into the ocean, Aladar is the one who comes to their rescue by carrying on his back until they wash up on shore.

He who sacrifices freedom for security deserves neither, to paraphrase Benjamin Franklin is a quote that I have wrestled with for many years. At times, I subscribe to the idea that I’d be willing to shed some of my freedom for some societal control to make the nation safe. The G8 countries seem to support this since 2001. At other times, I find myself disenchanted with this, particularly when I see the abuse some of our citizens have to endure while politicians wrap themselves in the flag and pontificate about how this control makes us safer. Extend this to more facets of day-to-day life and you get the California of Lt. Lenina Huxley (Sandra Bullock) of th SAPD. So that when a psycho blondie like Simon Phoenix (Wesley Snipes) shows up, they are hapless to act. They need a imprisoned rogue cop like John Spartan (Sylvester Stallone) who finds that civilization had gotten very strange. He’s been in stasis undergoing genetic-based skills rehab for 30+ years. But he now knows how to sew, tat and knit a sweater like a pro.

Humanity has done some remarkably evil things in the name of religion. It has also done many altruistic ones for the same reason. It seems that a lot of them evolve from an interpretation of past pronouncements rather than direct statements. Such is the burden of human history that it leads us to a point where sides have been chosen with a goal of eliminating the presence of another. We have to ask ourselves whether what we infer that has gone on before needs to change or remain static. This is the question Robert Langdon (Tom Hanks) as a Harvard Professor of Symbology and Sophie Neveu (Audrey Tautou), a cryptologist and puzzle solver, ask themselves and one another. Their quest takes them around Europe, ending up in England with a stop in London at Westminister Abbey for a clue near the tomb of Sir Issac newton. We see them cross the street going to the abbey, overlaid with the day of Sir Issac’s funeral. There we see the attendees along with the London landscape of the time.

I’ve always wanted to be a backup singer. Preferably for one of those groups that wears flashy suits and dances in sync. It doesn’t matter that I can’t carry a tune, I sound darn good in the shower. What would you do if you knew you were going to die in the not so distant future? I was told by a specialist that, depending upon the test results, I would have a short time left or I’d live a normal span of years. Before the result came back, I made some decisions that affected my life. It wasn’t hard to do but it was more difficult to stick to them. But Dexter Cornell (Dennis Quaid) doesn’t have the luxury of time for he has 24 hours to live after being poisoned, some guy kills his wife Gail (Jane Kaczmarek) and tosses her into Dex’s arms and later Detective Ulmer (Brion James) thinks he did it. Panic leads him to take his doctor hostage in an attempt to escape in the hopes of discovering who poisoned him. He first goes to the dorm room of his amateur stalker, Sydney Fuller (Meg Ryan) where he figures he can begin to track down his killer.

It takes a lot of chutzpah to pull off the demeanour of a gigolo. Just ask T.J. Hicks (Eddie Griffin), the man-whore rival of Deuce Bigalow (Rob Schneider). With his mangina, the he-bitch seems to have the real stuff for he is able to restore Bergita’s (Dina Platias) sight after a brief dalliance in Antoine’s (Oded Fehr) closet while Deuce and Antoine skirmish over the destruction of a fish tank.

Union lieutenant John W. Just when a guy and a dragon have a good scam going, fleecing unsuspecting villages for cash by killing a rampaging monster, along comes Kara (Dina Meyer) to toss a wrench into the works.. Sure, she has had it tough. The aristos have killed her dad. The town has sacrificed her to placate the dragon and he has swanned off carrying her to his lair for what the town hopes is lunch. But it turns out that Kara and Draco, the dragon, get along swimmingly and Bowen (Dennis Quaid) is left to cool his jets while the two of them witter on.

Max Gast (Udo Kier) is a diabolical gazillionaire and his wife Elizabeth (Brigitte Nielsen) is as scary a woman as one will ever meet. He has a plan to depopulate the world and she has the cojones to carry it out. When a minion drops the ball, she freezes him with a look and has him removed from the room without a second thought. The rest of the underlings look around and discover that their testicles are being drawn up into their body cavities. None of them want to find themselves targeted by her penetrating gaze.

I don’t remember most of my dreams. There are a couple that recur but all I remember is that I had it but no details remain. Some think that they are memories of past lives saturated with events of this one. But this implies that fate isn’t an abstract construct and could play a role in our lives. I’m leaning in the other direction but Doctor Cozy Carlisle (Robin Williams) doesn’t. I’ve met a couple of people who I could characterize as so despicable I’d be surprised if anyone who note their disappearance. But they likely have someone in their lives who love them for some vague reason. I’ve not had a reason to ask as my brain is full of enough stuff that I don’t need to waste the storage. But then there is Mona Dearly (Bette Midler) who may be the most detested female living in the small town of Verplanck, New York (characterized as the test site some years past for the Yugo car company). When her car brakes fail and she flies right off a cliff into a watery grave in the opening scene, Police Chief Wyatt Rash’s (Danny DeVito) suspicions are aroused after he learns the brake lines had been intentionally cut. Soon, suspects are popping up all over town. There is her husband Phil (William Fichtner) and her son Jeff (Marcus Thomas), both of whom hated her as much as the rest of the town. Jeff is in the landscaping business with Bobby Calzone (Casey Affleck), who Mona would verbally and even physically batter. Or how about the pretty, tough-spoken Ellen (Neve Campbell)? Or maybe the woman who waving an affair with both Phil and Jeff? Rona (Jamie Lee Curtis) is the plain-speaking waitress at the local diner who was envious of Mona’s family. Lots of suspects and lots of motives.

I’ve had bad days. You’ve had bad days. We’ve all had bad days. Some bad days are worse than others. We cope, we overcome, we endure. We get past the. We try to make the best of whatever circumstances in which we find ourselves. But few of us have the kind of day that Abe Klein (Andrew Lee Potts) is having. It starts when his girlfriend Mimi (Elena Anaya) tells him that she is pregnant, he isn’t ready for this and she is taking the train to visit her mum who’ll care for her. She borrows his phone to make a call but is assaulted by a snatch’n'grab causing Abe’s phone to be switched with that of a button man, Lynch (Gary Oldman). After a call and on a whim, Abe takes one of Lynch’s contracts. He finds himself with a safe full of cash, a baked-on-weed buddy holding the gun and a target who may have a better offer to make but then there is the client who’ll be cranky if the hit fails. Sadly, Lynch, who has fallen in lust with Mimi, has followed Abe home to retrieve his cell phone.

Starting with an Oscar de la Renta show in 2002 who did a cerulean blue collection, through Yves Saint-Laurent and 8 other designers, into selected department stores and on down to the bargain bins, the blue in her sweater has been passed from one to another until it ended up on her back.

You’re too young. Mom and dad know best. Listen to your parents. You have no idea what you are doing. You’ll have to live with that if you keep it up. Parents are always to willing to offer advice. Even when you thought you didn’t need any. As I grew up, I found that sometimes they were right, sometimes not. Bit I also realized that they didn’t really know what they were talking about, it was just panic chatter. Most of it was guesswork. Some day, Caprice (Selma Blair), aka Ursula Udders, oft naked girl about town, will know that her parents Vaughn (Chris Isaak) and Sylvia Stickles (Tracey Ullman) had only her best interests at heart when they trap and handcuff poor Caprice in a family intervention. But for now, they just want to keep her from throwing her life away. So pharma is their only alternative despite the humping squirrels.

The new guy is always a target for fun and frolics. Sometimes the tormentors make a mistake. They pick on someone who is able to teach them a lesson in etiquette. Pete Nessip (Wesley Snipes) drops by a jumper bar and plops himself down at a vacant table. But it seems that table is the regular spot for a rowdy team who think they’ll teach him a lesson. Sadly for them, the fight is going badly until Jessie Crossman (Yancy Butler) intervenes to save them from having some appendage broken more than once.

Jerry Springer as POTUS? He may be able to talk the talk but I’d imagine he’d have a tough time dealing with the day-to-day stuff. The second shock is that Dolph Lundgren is the director of this movie and he does a better than average job. Colour me surprised.

I believe that there are very few films that can change your life. They entertain, inform, impress, give pause and a variety of other influences and effects. But it takes the collision of a point in time in your life, being in a particular frame of mind, in some random location, thinking ideas of little consequence when a series of frames comes onto the screen and burn themselves into your synapses. Suddenly, you are different. This happened to me the first time I watched La dolce vita and it has shaped my life ever since. I won’t go into details (they are best left to my posthumous memoirs) but don’t discount the effects movies can have on your life.

One day I made a date with a woman whom I had met through mutual interest. She seemed funny, well read, intelligent, opinionated, argumentative, sappy, creative, etc. It went well and we began seeing one another constantly. In a short period of time, I found myself seeing a whole new group of people, going to places I hadn’t frequented before and doing stuff that I hadn’t done before. Where were my friends, my hangouts, my routines? Most has been usurped and I hadn’t even noticed. I was in a new world not of my making and had little control over what was going on. Dave Kovic (Kevin Kline) knows what I mean. He’s hired to double for POTUS and due to circumstances beyond his control, one event turns into his life. It is only when Ellen Mitchell (Sigourney Weaver), the President’s somewhat estranged wife, asks who he is does he realize the depths to which the fraud has sunk. Now he needs to figure out how to extricate himself and still keep his soul intact.

Stuntman Mike (Kurt Russel) has developed what he considers a foolproof ritual to murder his victims. He doesn’t drink, he sweetalks his victims, he waits until they are inebriated and he follows them when they drive off to their next destination. He finds a deserted stretch of road, circles around and floors it when their car heads towards him. As his car has been death proofed to prevent serious injury, he can drive straight into them and usually walk away. He is able to kill all of the passengers including Shanna (Jordan Ladd), Arlene (Vanessa Ferlito), and Julia (Sydney Tamiia Poitier). He gets away with a broken nose and collar bone plus an index finger according to Dr. Dakota Block (Marley Shelton) when she’s questioned by Edgar McGraw (James Parks) and his son Earl (Michael Parks). She’s none too happy about it though as she struts her doctor catwalk stuff down the hall. I’ve never been treated by a doc as striking as her and I’d welcome having her makeup account.

A family funeral always brings out the best in people. A stranger who introduces himself as Peter (Peter Dinklage) shows up at the funeral of Daniel (Matthew MacFadyen) and Robert’s (Rupert Graves) father with the intent of blackmail. He’s after a bundle not to show around pictures he has proving the affair he had with their father. Due to circumstances beyond his control, he finds himself tied up in curtain cord, tripping on acid that has another fellow naked on the roof admiring the birdies and learning why mum says not to jump on the furniture. After crashing his noggin on a table, his hosts figure him dead and spend a moment trying to think of where they can stash his body for the duration of his ex-lovers’ and their dad’s funeral. Yeah, it didn’t take me all that long to reach the same conclusion.

Ahh… the joys of youth. You figure you know everything, you’re immortal and there is no point in listening to anyone older. Sam Decker (Dolph Lundgren) has taken the unenviable chore of monitoring detention class, handling a half dozen or so miscreants which is like herding cats. But it takes a band of armed Bosnian villains invading the school en route to their true goal to show the aimless youth that they don’t know much about anything, particularly survival.

Some things should never be shared. Rebecca (Jenny McCarthy) enters a room only to find Gabe, a one-night-stand, ready for action. He’s propped over a pillow pile with a bass (yep, the fish) shoved up his ass, waiting for her to touch it. Eeeuuuuwwww…
