How is your intuition? Mine is amazing. For some things it works like a charm. For other stuff, it is a dud. Jonah Baldwin (Ross Malinger) calls into a late night talk radio show looking for a new mother. His widowed father Sam (Tom Hanks) ends up on the phone laying bare his feeling for his wife. As a result the mail pours in and Jonah pulls out a letter from Annie (Meg Ryan) in Baltimore and refuses to give up until Sam agrees to meet her.

I’ve never had a dog. People who have one tell me there is a lot to do to maintain their health and well-being. But I don’t think that is the whole story. Dooley (James Belushi) has been teamed up with Jerry Lee (Mac) for about 10 years now and he brushes the dog’s teeth (but no flossing), gives his breath spray and cleans out his ears. Wasn’t it one of the Wolfe boys who said that you can’t go home again? I suppose it is true in an abstract sense since all places and those returning are not the same as time passes. You can go back but you shouldn’t expect things to be the same as when you left. Tory Bodeen (Claire Forlani) is back to stay in her small home town but she’s not expecting much to be different when she left. Via a psychic vision, she knew where to find the body of her best friend Hope who had been murdered, the first of a string that continues every year on the same day. Her father had been the principal suspect when he was paid off to skip town. Folks are not too welcoming when she begins to open up her small shop on main street. But a few are able to move beyond the gossip. Cade Lavelle (Oliver Hudson) is still goofy over her and his sister Faith (Josie Davis) proves to be a fountain of support that Tory (and Faith) finds surprising.

I don’t know how many days it took to film, how many people were involved, what sort of complexity it took to place the cameras, how often they had to do it to get it right or who did the actual stunt. I just sit there open-mouthed when United States Marshall Sam Gerard (Tommy Lee Jones) opens that roof door to see Mark Roberts/Mark Warren/Mark Sheridan (Wesley Snipes) standing on the edge of the roof facing towards the street and says he can’t be arrested because of what he knows. Mark Whatever then leans out, tumbles off the edge of the roof, swings down attached to some rope and swings out and over the street to the rail yards and lands on the roof of the station and leaps onto a train car leaving for elsewhere. My little heart goes pitty-pat every time.

There are times in your life when an opportunity presents itself and you know that if you handle it properly, all sorts of wonderful things will happen. But how do you proceed? Andy (Luke Wilson) is asked by Lorna (Natasha Henstridge) to crack her neck when she is felling morose and down, her muscles are tight and she is tired. He doesn’t know how but he figures he should try and pick her up. But when he gives her a line about coming back to his place or goes to hers, she’s disappointed and grumpy that it is the best he can come up with.

I remember meeting a fellow who seemed to be a about a mile wide and an inch deep. He knew a little about a lot of things but not very much about any one topic. I thought he’d last about 10 minutes in his job and flit off to something else in the blink of an eye. But he seemed to careen from place to another, starting with working for me to being my boss’s boss in less time than it takes to get a legislative change made. It made me wonder at the purpose of management and whether I wanted to join their ranks. Elle Woods (Reese Witherspoon) shows many of the same skills. Displaying a capacity to absorb information and knowledge not expected of someone with her demeanour, she accomplishes her goals with the skills of a veteran and still looks good with her French manicure. I guess it pays never to underestimate someone with a law degree from Harvard no matter how blonde she may be.

The process of tracking someone is more of an art than a science. Figuring out where they are going and what they are doing is not a challenge for amateurs. Deidre (Natascha McElhone) and Sam (Robert De Niro) make it look easy but it could serve as a textbook example as the pose as tourists taking snapshots, having coffee at a local bistro and generally almost being in the way of their prey.

Each time we meet somebody, we form an impression of who they are, what they’re like and how they will handle themselves in many situations. Sometimes we’re surprised and other times, we’re not. Ben Holmes (Ben Affleck) has just met Vic DeFranco (Jack Kehler) and seen him in his car. Ben is traveling with Sarah Lewis (Sandra Bullock) from New York to Savannah, Georgia and he asks her, “How do you know I’m not dangerous?” and Sarah smiles, then laughs, then chortles and just walks off leaving him to draw his own conclusions.

So why not? But then there are the consequences and you can go back for a do-over. How do you fix things? Roxy Harvey (Jasmine Guy) revives a drowned guy, Daisy Adair (Sarah Wynter) trips up her actress colleague to take her place on stage, Mason (Callum Blue) gets shot by a robber yet steals the cash. All you can do is to live with the morals to which you subscribe and hope that you don’t have to suffer from any betrayal.

Truth is a slippery topic. Often it depends upon your point of view. When you decide to go home for a visit after being away for seven years, it is probably a good idea not to drop by your local bar and get completely shit-faced. Melanie Carmichael (Reese Witherspoon) is now a successful New York fashion designer but she needs to get her high school husband to sign the divorce papers he’s been reluctant to do. A boatload of shots loosens her tongue to the extent that she outs Bobby Ray (Ethan Embry), her old high school chum, and moves on to confirm the rumour that she married Jake Perry (Josh Lucas) because he got her pregnant under the bleachers. Topping off her evening out, she pukes regally all over the front seat of Jake’s truck as he tries to take her home. Ahhh… those high school memories.

Mothers and daughters, the relationship is a complex one. Sometimes it is what happens to others that has a profound impact on our place in the world. It can show us that there is magic all around us or we can play a part in making others think that it exists. Amélie Poulain (Audrey Tautou) is a waitress in a small Montmartre café in Paris when she learns of the death of Princess Diana and she decides it’s time for her to intervene in the lives of those around her. She becomes a guardian angel and a secret matchmaker by working out complex but secret schemes. She leads a blind man to the Metro station, giving him a vivid description of the street he passes along. She persuades her dad to follow his dream of a world tour by stealing his garden gnome and having a flight attendant send pictures of it from all over the world. She convinces her unhappy building concierge that the husband who abandoned her had in fact sent her a final love letter just before his death. She helps Lucien (Jamel Debbouze), a young man who works for Mr. Collignon (Michel Robin) who is the bullying neighbourhood green grocer by playing practical jokes on Collignon that undermines his confidence and eventually has him questioning his own sanity.

I just love a good conspiracy. So it seems do a lot of people. Just do a quick search of the internet—plugging conspiracy into Google yields about 47.5 million results—and you will see how popular the word is. Sure, some of them might be dictionary definitions and a few might be part of a band name, but most lead to descriptions of some event where there is one or more persons colluding in something nefarious, devious or complex. This movie brings together some of the more popular ones and tosses them together and pours out a mix in a recipe to excite even the least interested of us in the gossip of persons known to just about everyone. Maybe there are some guys in Paraguay who might be puzzled by a story involving Jack the Ripper, the Masons, the British Royal family, the medical doctors, the British constabulary, the hookers of London, the Irish, the gangs of China, the parents of illegitimate children, the pubs of East London, the Industrial Revolution, the use of anisette and laudanum, chasing the dragon with opium, forensic science, John Merrick, Scotland Yard, English poets and authors, surgery and some poor girl’s mum and dad. Yikes, something for all of us.

Jerry is clearing out his desk and calls upon others to join him but the only one to take up the banner is Dorothy Bird (Renée Zellweger). I’m the kind of guy that stores love to see stumbling through their doors. I have some trouble with impulse control. In recent years, this has manifested itself in the urge to buy whatever shiny catches my eye. I get home and shake my head and wonder what I was thinking when I pulled out my credit card. Mostly I’m able to control it but every so often, a friend will look around my place, see something new, shake their head and snort in annoyance. But I sure don’t have the troubles that Frances (Diane Lane) will have after buying a dilapidated old villa while on a two-week coach tour of the Tuscany region of Italy. But I have to admire her reasoning for making the purchase. If I thought I didn’t have the life I wanted and found myself afraid of its prospects, I’d pony up the bucks and buy that place.
