Truth is a slippery topic. Often it depends upon your point of view. There is an old maxim that says something like “history is written by the victors.” Joan Wilder (Kathleen Turner) learns all about it after being lured to write a puff piece about a middle eastern ruler by the name of Omar (Spiros Focas). She discovers that he is a brutal theocrat and that, until she agrees to finish the article to introduce him to the world as a benevolent, enlightened ruler working to unite the Arab world, she’ll languish in prison. Enter her somewhat world weary swain Jack Colton (Michael Douglas).

Meeting a new sweetie is always a caution. Jesse Stone (Tom Selleck) gentlemanly opens a door for Abby Taylor (Polly Shannon) who barrels through without so much as a thanks. She comes in ranting about Jesse’s assault on Joe Genest (Stephen Baldwin) who chose to ignore a restraining order. She wonders about how dangerous Joe is when Jesse tell her they keep guys like him as pets in south-central LA. She’s smitten and he’s interested.

Jerry Maguire (Tom Cruise) is a sports agent working for a big agency who has a crisis of faith. As a result, he authors a mission statement for the sports management business and how he believes that it should operate. After circulating it to all staff, he’s applauded by his fellow employees who are touched by the honesty of the document but the owners want him fired. Jerry is clearing out his desk and calls upon others to join him but the only one to take up the banner is Dorothy Bird (Renée Zellweger). It’s easy to figure out how many can talk the talk but hesitate to walk the walk.

How many bad days can you have? Is it possible to be plain unlucky? Ashley Albright (Lindsay Lohan) seems to think so. After a string of unfortunate events, she ducks out of a store in the mistaken belief that things have changed. She swings her arms in delight and slams a fist into an innocent pedestrian taking him out with a somersault flip. As the homily goes, some days are better than others.

John Tucker (Jesse Metcalfe) has it all. He’s dating Carrie (Arielle Kebbe), Heather (Ashanti) and Beth (Sophia Bush) without the others knowledge. When the three find out that they are part of a foursome, rather than taking it out on John, they go after one another during a volleyball game as they lash out with a tossed ball to the head, a shoving match and a swat with a bag of balls. All too soon they figure out who should be really punished.

Notwithstanding the lunacy of punishing themselves rather than the titular perpetrator, the best part of the movie is the classy comedic elegance of Jenny McCarthy in the role of Lori Spencer.

Everyone has a regret or two. There are some that can nibble away at your conscience and surface when you are alone and in the dark. Often they tend to be those where you had a choice of which path to take. You look back at them and argue with yourself over the choice made, that you could have stopped yourself from taking a decision. They are ones where, in a split second, you tell yourself not to do it. But you go ahead anyway. Leeann Lewis (Rebecca Pidgeon) is plagued by many such regrets. She is taking care of her invalid mother, Mary Lewis (Jean Morpurgo), instead of living her life selling homes in sunny LA. She is trying to romance Jesse Stone (Tom Selleck) but she has a leash about her ankle and can’t travel too far from mum and home. She is wishing her missing sister hadn’t been murdered in a bank holdup some years earlier. And there are others.

I’ve watched a lot of movies. After a few, you begin to see patterns emerge and some things which appear odd or interesting once, reappear again and again. But I must admit some of them are unique to this little flick. A tip of the hat to the folks who can up with guard sheep with really sharp teeth, duck fights with boxing gloves on their webbed feet, popping that champagne cork up Joey Cortino’s (Billy Burke) nose and him digging it out, Pepper Gianini’s (Pamela Gidley) tongue going in an ear then coming out the other, the watermelon in Vincenzo Cortino’s (Lloyd Bridges) mouth and so on. But then I quite like fart jokes.

One of the many steps we take as we grow into an adult is consider how we fit into the culture in which we find ourselves. This is particularly the case when we move to another city, take on a new occupation and gather around us new friends and loved ones. When we’re faced with showing someone new where we come from, sometimes we slip back into our old life leaving our new acquaintance gobsmacked. It is as if they have been replaced by a not-to-bright alien.

George (Alessandro Nivola) has the demeanour of a cosmopolitan sophisticate and his new wife Madeleine (Embeth Davidtz), a chic art gallery owner from Chicago, is smitten. On a trip to corral a new artist who lives near George’s family, they stop by for a visit. Madeleine doesn’t know quite what to make of the George she sees and how he reacts to old family friends. From the gospel singing with his old church choir buddies to how he is greeted at a church supper, she is stunned by this man she hardly knows.

Most people see the fat kids as a source of amusement and ridicule. Their feelings are treated by others like those of a cartoon character. Jamie Palamino (Amy Smart), the ex-cheerleader, thinks of Chris Brander (Ryan Reynolds) as a friend while he’s pining away in unrequited love for her. She can’t see past her memories of him and he’s now ready to take a shot if only the proper moment comes along.

It’s hard to grieve the loss of someone you love. About all you have is your memories and perhaps somewhere which marks their life. Jesse Stone (Tom Selleck) lost his girl Abby Taylor (Polly Shannon) in an earlier movie, Stone Cold (2005). He visits her grave, kneels, chokes up, squeezes out a tear at the memory of her death.
