There are times in your life when an opportunity presents itself and you know that if you handle it properly, all sorts of wonderful things will happen. But how do you proceed? Andy (Luke Wilson) is asked by Lorna (Natasha Henstridge) to crack her neck when she is felling morose and down, her muscles are tight and she is tired. He doesn’t know how but he figures he should try and pick her up. But when he gives her a line about coming back to his place or goes to hers, she’s disappointed and grumpy that it is the best he can come up with.

I remember meeting a fellow who seemed to be a about a mile wide and an inch deep. He knew a little about a lot of things but not very much about any one topic. I thought he’d last about 10 minutes in his job and flit off to something else in the blink of an eye. But he seemed to careen from place to another, starting with working for me to being my boss’s boss in less time than it takes to get a legislative change made. It made me wonder at the purpose of management and whether I wanted to join their ranks. Elle Woods (Reese Witherspoon) shows many of the same skills. Displaying a capacity to absorb information and knowledge not expected of someone with her demeanour, she accomplishes her goals with the skills of a veteran and still looks good with her French manicure. I guess it pays never to underestimate someone with a law degree from Harvard no matter how blonde she may be.

The process of tracking someone is more of an art than a science. Figuring out where they are going and what they are doing is not a challenge for amateurs. Deidre (Natascha McElhone) and Sam (Robert De Niro) make it look easy but it could serve as a textbook example as the pose as tourists taking snapshots, having coffee at a local bistro and generally almost being in the way of their prey.

Each time we meet somebody, we form an impression of who they are, what they’re like and how they will handle themselves in many situations. Sometimes we’re surprised and other times, we’re not. Ben Holmes (Ben Affleck) has just met Vic DeFranco (Jack Kehler) and seen him in his car. Ben is traveling with Sarah Lewis (Sandra Bullock) from New York to Savannah, Georgia and he asks her, “How do you know I’m not dangerous?” and Sarah smiles, then laughs, then chortles and just walks off leaving him to draw his own conclusions.

How much discipline does one need to avoid straying from the path assigned to you? You’ve been given the task to carry out the assigned instructions but there is the temptation to stray and to be distracted by something shiny. You figure there doesn’t seem to be any retribution. So why not? But then there are the consequences and you can go back for a do-over. How do you fix things? Roxy Harvey (Jasmine Guy) revives a drowned guy, Daisy Adair (Sarah Wynter) trips up her actress colleague to take her place on stage, Mason (Callum Blue) gets shot by a robber yet steals the cash. All you can do is to live with the morals to which you subscribe and hope that you don’t have to suffer from any betrayal.
