The Tuxedo

Sometimes what you think you should expect from someone can be antithetical to what they can exhibit. (i.e. people often have hidden depths). Del Blaine (Jennifer Love Hewitt) is a meek water scientist who wants to be a CSA field agent. Jimmy Tong (Jackie Chan) is a well-meaning but awkward New York City limo driver with a willingness to assume the role of his superspy boss. When the bad guys find them on the roof doing surveillance, Del takes out some of the bad guys while Jimmy shambles about pummeling them into next week.

Total Recall

Memory is about all we have to distinguish us from everybody else. We could all look like an androgynous Arnold Schwarzenegger but it would be our memories which would forge us into the persons we are. So the implant of false memories even for something as trivial as a fake holiday like they do at Rekall can cause some consternation if it isn’t done properly. This happened to Douglas Quaid (Arnold Schwarzenegger) and it really plays havoc with his personality and his life. You see it was fake to begin with so that friends aren’t really and his wife Lori (Sharon Stone) isn’t. At least she is honest with him, explaining that what’s there now is only two months old after trying to kick him into next week.

Tombstone

During my boyhood, cowboys and Indians were all the rage. TV was festooned with westerns. I remember pretending to be one or the other day in and day out. So when a movie like Tombstone comes along, it wasn’t long before I bought a DVD copy to see if the memories held. It did. When Wyatt Earp (Kurt Russell) sets off for the showdown, not knowing Doc Holliday (Val Kilmer) beats him there. Doc confronts a surprised Johnny Ringo (Michael Biehn) but Ringo is nervous and tells Doc that he doesn’t want to fight. But being a black hat, Ringo’s nature gets the better of him and he accepts. The classic image of two men staring each other down as they circle leads to both men reaching for their pistols. Doc gets the first shot off, hitting Ringo in the head and killing him. Yep, I’m six-years-old again.

They're Playing with Fire

I came across this movie in one of those bargain bins. You know the kind where you can buy two and get three for a buck. I don’t think they were cut-outs. Maybe they were a dumped to make room for smothering else. It didn’t matter much to me once I saw Sybil Danning above the title. I picked it up and clasped it to my chest with all the anticipation of a 15-year-old. Like many lads, Sybil Danning just has to stand there with her feet spread apart a foot or so with her fists on her hips and smoulder. I was under her sway. She could have her way with me and I’d smile and smile and smile. Sadly for me, it has yet to happen but one can dream. As for the movie, I’m having some trouble remembering.

Two Weeks Notice

Having a sibling is always a great source of amusement. One can do just about anything reasonable and be forgiven. But strains can show at the oddest times. George Wade (Hugh Grant) is a slacker. He’s unwilling to take the family business seriously and chooses to hire his lawyer models who graduate from caribbean law schools. Howard Wade (David Haig) is getting fed up and he wants George to get his act together George, in an act of brotherly retribution, pays him back for this dressing down by flushing the toilet while Howard is in the shower. I still chortle every time I see this. But then I’m a softie when it comes to fart jokes. Sigh…
