Divine Secrets of the Ya-Ya Sisterhood

Mothers and daughters, the relationship is a complex one. Siddalee Walker (Sandra Bullock) is worried she will turn into her mom, Vivi Abbott Walker (Ellen Burstyn), and has resisted the entreaties of Connor McGill (Angus Macfadyen) to marry, fought of the ticking of he biological clock. She has based this upon what she remembers of her growing up around her parents and not the context of what her memories as a kid truly tell. The sophistication of memory can show what happened but not why they happened. A little perspective and some comparison to others would make quite a difference. But no, kids always know better.

Half Past Dead

I was watching my umpteenth Steven Seagal movie, cheering when the good guys triumphed, hissing when the bad guys did something nefarious and wondering once again whether they speed up the camera when he does those marital arts hand moves. All of a sudden, the bad guys dropped out the helicopter in the rain onto the prison roof. One of them sweeps around a long leather coat with the rain dripping off it in a broad spray and Nia Peeples takes centre stage. All I could do was gape at her presence in that leather outfit with the cropped top and blue eye makeup. I’m sure that guys watching this everywhere gave pause and realized that their hearts were going pitty-pat.

I don’t have an inclination to be famous. It seems to me to be a self-defeating process. The more you make yourself open to be scavanged by those who think that others want to know about you, the less you are who you want or need to be. Roxie Hart (Renée Zellweger) and Velma Kelly (Catherine Zeta-Jones) both seem to live, dream and yearn for fame. It is their direction in life and the only way they can make a living and remain in the spotlight. But what gyrations they must go through to gain the appreciation by others.

Bubba Ho-Tep

The residents of many nursing homes are placed into a passive mode. They are subject to the whims and vagaries of services provided by others. When they decide to become active for some reason, it takes an enormous amount of convincing of those in control that something needs to change. That is the case for two denizens of a home in Mud Creek, Texas. Toss in the fact that Elvis ( Bruce Campbell) thinks he is The King who swapped his status for an impersonator to get away from the limelight and Jack (Ossie Davis) who claims to be John F. Kennedy and has had his skin dyed and the chance of anyone believing them that something evil is afoot is marginal at best. So the duo decide that it is up to them to tackle it themselves, Elvis with his walker and Jack in his wheelchair.

28 Days Later...

I’m a consumer. I like shopping for stuff. I like reading about stuff that’s coming (and wish it were here now for me to buy). I like to follow the evolution of stuff as it comes to market and see how the roll out of new stuff is accepted. I’ve got lots of stuff that never got that public acceptance it should have received. It sits right next to the stuff that did that is often replaced by the next gen stuff. I guess I’m the poster boy for consumerism. So this movie was a blow to my mad subconscious that regulates my buy, buy, buy fever. It shows a world where there won’t be any new books, movies, CDs and all manner of other toys that keeps me distracted from the real problems our world faces. And then Selena (Naomie Harris) has the gall to tell Jim (Cillian Murphy) essentially the same thing. I was bummed for a time until a buddy called to tell me what he discovered in his latest foray into the shops and I remembered this is just a movie.
