Stranger Than Fiction

What does it take to make a stand? How do we decide to do it and stick to it? Would something like a visit from the IRS make us change our mind? Maybe. But it might depend upon who is sent to deliver the message. Ana Pascal (Maggie Gyllenhaal) is confused about her reaction to Harold Crick (Will Ferrell), an IRS agent. Despite the audit and the work he has to do, she finds she likes him. But she’s adamant that the 78 percent of the taxes she has paid is sufficient as she doesn’t want to pay the rest which she believes will go to national defense, corporate bailouts and political campaign funding.

John Tucker Must Die

John Tucker (Jesse Metcalfe) has it all. He’s dating Carrie (Arielle Kebbe), Heather (Ashanti) and Beth (Sophia Bush) without the others knowledge. When the three find out that they are part of a foursome, rather than taking it out on John, they go after one another during a volleyball game as they lash out with a tossed ball to the head, a shoving match and a swat with a bag of balls. All too soon they figure out who should be really punished.

Notwithstanding the lunacy of punishing themselves rather than the titular perpetrator, the best part of the movie is the classy comedic elegance of Jenny McCarthy in the role of Lori Spencer.

Keeping Up with the Steins

It’s easy to lose sight of what’s important when trying to keep up with what is going on around you, particularly when you live in a neighbourhood that has made an art of oneupmanship. Adam Fiedler (Jeremy Piven) is traumatized to learn what his former business partner Arnie Stein (Larry Miller) has done for his son’s bar mitzvah—a Titanic theme aboard an ocean liner—and frets constantly over how he can best this half million dollar extravaganza. The Sentinel

How do you convince the powers that be that you didn’t do something? All of the clues lead Secret Service investigator David Breckinridge (Kiefer Sutherland) to conclude that his colleague Peter Garrison (Michael Douglas) is a traitor involved in a plot to assassinate POTUS (David Rasche). Pete happens to be in a coffee shop that is a drop for a drug cartel, he has a bank account that has dubious deposits, he has failed a polygraph, he finds himself as bait for an informant who has breached Secret Service security, he’s shifty and evasive in answering questions and it is obvious that he is hiding something. The investigators want to know what it is when they burst into Pete’s home. Unfortunately for him, his secret has nothing to do with any plot against the government but could bring about its collapse.

Underworld: Evolution

All Selene (Kate Beckinsale) and Michael Corvin (Scott Speedman) want are a few supplies and a little gnosh before heading home to get a little sleep after belting about the bad guy minions. But no, the townsfolk see Michael’s picture on TV and decide to corral him. He objects, they start shooting, he runs, they plug him many times, he keeps going, skedaddling towards the woods, they follow shooting all manner of guns making mince meat of his torso. Selene decides that’s enough for now and helps out by dodging bullets and cracking skulls until they run out of townies. Then it is time to replenish Michael with some of Selene’s blood just before the really bad guy shows up. All they wanted was a snack and a nap, all they get instead is Markus Corvinus (Tony Curran), the very first vampire.
