What sort of sign do you need to tell you that you’ve met your intended? How can you tell if it is true or just a quirk of circumstance? Captain James Norrington (Jack Davenport) of the Royal Navy is being promoted to Commodore. During the ceremony, he proposes to Elizabeth Swann (Keira Knightley). Before answering, she faints and tumbles into the bay not because she is swooning with delight but rather the corset she was wearing was so tight that she had trouble breathing.

What would you do for love? Now suppose that the love is unrequited? Admiral James Norrington (Jack Davenport) is helping Elizabeth Swann (Keira Knightley) and others escape from the cursed pirate ship. When she asks why, after all that has passed between them in the past, he tells her that he truly loves her.

Norrington lets them loose from the ship’s brig and watches as they scramble across a tow line back to their captured ship. Elizabeth is the last to leave, and asks Norrington why he’s setting them free. He replies that he has now chosen his side, though he knows this does not absolve him of his other sins including his betrayal. He knows that he’s not going to win her heart but he’s driven to show her that he is willing to be a good man despite the fact that it may cost him his life.
